Established by the Sushma Koirala Memorial Trust (SKMT) in 1997 with the support of INTERPLAST Germany e.V., SKM Hospital has grown from humble beginnings into one of Nepal’s most respected specialist clinics. The hospital was founded to carry forward the vision of Sushma Koirala, a devoted social worker committed to improving the lives of marginalized communities, with a strong focus on the empowerment of women.

In its early years, INTERPLAST members—doctors, nurses, technicians, and engineers—traveled to Nepal with instruments, expertise, and compassion to help build the hospital infrastructure and train Nepalese staff. Several professionals, including the engineer Hein Stahl, dedicated months and even years of service on-site. Since 2009, the hospital has been fully operated by local staff who now manage all departments with increasing independence and professionalism.

Thanks to the voluntary efforts of many and generous donations over the years, SKM Hospital now provides world-class care in plastic and reconstructive surgery, particularly in burn management, trauma reconstruction, and treatment of congenital conditions. The hospital offers hope to underserved patients who would otherwise go without care.

INTERPLAST continues to play a vital role, supporting the hospital financially—helping to cover treatment costs for indigent patients, funding major medical investments, and sustaining day-to-day operations. The hospital’s departments continue to evolve through visits from international specialists and advanced training opportunities for local medical personnel.

Through community partnerships, education initiatives, and patient-centered healthcare, SKM Hospital remains dedicated to its founding mission: delivering high-quality, inclusive care that transforms lives.
